the point where I have to rebuild from the last backup. Repair/Compact doesn''t
work.
Whole objects disappear, and when a compile is attempted the message "Error
accessing file. Network connection may have been lost." appears.

Try creating a new blank database and import all objects
from the old one.
You must import Import/Export Specs (if any) together
with the tables.

I used to have this problem when I was trying to make upgrades on one mdb a
different computer running a different (newer) Access version. I would do
as you did, and import a form that I had created on one mdb, and it would
hose the target mdb. It *did not* seem to matter if I was importing only
forms with compatible code.
My solution was to stop exporting/importing forms, reports, and modules.
Eventually, both computers got the same Access version, and the problem no
longer exists, but I still back up the target mdb before any exports of
objects.
