No. The AIX4 version of DB2 is different from the AIX5 version in a
number of ways. Including the modification level, which means that AIX
itself won''t allow them to be installed on the incorrect version of
DB2.

DB2 for AIX 4 is versioned 8.1.0.x, while DB2 for AIX 5 is versioned
8.1.1.x. The fixpaks follow this, and thus won''t install on the
others'' install. There are other incompatabilities inside, but they''re
all moot after this.

You may be able to compress the fixpak onto your CD media. Of course,
you would need to uncompress back to your hard disk prior to
installing.

IBM also provides fixpaks already burned on CD. However, again, I
believe that once you get these media, the instructions are to copy
both media to your hard disk prior to installing.

Excepting for backup or archival purposes, the general suggestion would
be to put the fixpak image on an NFS mountpoint somewhere in your
organisation and use it directly from there. For backup or archival
purposes, then, compressing the image prior to burning should suffice.

No, you can''t use the AIX 4.3 DB2 image on AIX 5.

If you can''t find them, our readme has some ideas on how to work around
the size (see also Darin''s post below):

"To install IBM DB2 Version 8.1.4 from the CD-ROMs on AIX 5L, you are

The file sets on the REGULAR FIXPAK 4 (Volume 2 of 4) are only required

Thanks for your precisions. Well my point is only that the size of the
fixpack exceeds 700 Mb, the size of a usual CD, and we get used to download
and backup on this media. Couldn''t IBM change and use a targz, that I think
could allow more compression ?

Besides, the Fixpack for Aix5 contains both 32 and 64 bit codepath &
libraries. If my system is 64 bit, everything will be installed. If my
system is 32 bit, I guess only the 32 bit code would be installed. Why not
making a 32 bit FP for AIX5 32 bit and a 32 & 64 bit FP for AIX5 64 bit ?
