May as well start with the latest one. But do check on the version(s) that
may be installed on a particular hosting-service.

Depends on the server you''ll host it...
If your host/server supports php5, take the leap. If not, start with
php4 and wait until more hosts support 5. I usually suggest that people
start with the latest stable version, and in this case it''s 5.0.2.
However, I haven''t seen a lot of support for this from hosts yet.
If you''re running your own debian server, you don''t have to build from
source, there is already a resource for keeping an up-to-date LAMP
platform at dotdeb.org. I use that for development only right now, but
may be pushing it to production if I don''t have any problems in the next
few months.
