I am not sure if gnus is able to do that, but I use gnus and I really
like this program.

I use slrn as the reader and vim as my text editor. slrn is console
based program. It is available for both *nix systems and Windows - the
same with vim of course. It has a lot of features... It allows a lot
of different sorting options, and there are custom sorts as well. I am
still learning it my self since I just switched a couple of months ago
