Virtual Account Numbers are generally used to prevent fraud - they provide a short-term code which allows access to a credit card (saY) for a brief period of time. Quite why you'd need one on your electricity bill I do not know ... they are things you pay (possibly using a VAN) rather than something you need to process a payment into an electricity account, given that you can't take money out of the account in any way, shape, or form. Compromise my electricity account, and all you can do is pay my bill for me, which I would not be objecting to ... :laugh:

But the process is simple: the account originator generates a unique ID value (the virtual account number) and store it in his DB along with the account number that it relates to, the number of transactions which are allowed on the VAN, and an expiry timestamp. (The VAN may look like a regular account number or it can look very different - different is best because it is more obvious that this is more secure). When the VAN is used the expiry is checked, and if exceeded the VAN account is deleted and the request rejected. If it is accepted, the usage count is reduced, and if that reaches zero then the account is expired and deleted after the transaction is complete.

Simple enough, no?
