If you are trying to protect yourself from ransomware, then the best solution is just follow the golden rules:
1) Backup. Do regular backups, to at least two different drives, and have an "air gap" between your backups and your "Live data". If the worst happens, you can put two fingers up the the ransomer, and reinstall from your backup in under an hour. Backup thoroughly, and backup often.
2) Don't open suspicious emails and links - and never download EXE files from unknown or dodgy sites! Exactly what you expect: if you don't give them an opening, they can't get in.
3) Always patch your system to the latest version - it includes security patches which may save your data.
4) If you suspect you are infected, immediately disconnect from networks, USB drives, WiFi, everything. Preventing it spreading is as important as not getting "hit" in teh first place.
5) Never pay the money. Partly because there is no guarantee that paying will get you your data back. Instead, it marks you as someone who really wants it back, and thus will pay more, and more on the promise that it can be recovered. It's the equivelant of having "SUCKER!" tattooed on your forehead... But mostly because every time they get paid, the more it encourages them to continue. If there is no money in it, they won't do it. Simple as that.
