If you are buying a scanner in, you can get this from the manufacturers.

When you have that, test the info against the hardware using existing code - hyperterminal, probably, or Notepad if it emulates a keyboard - and then start working that into your application.

Sorry it's all generic, but we have no idea what scanner you are using, no idea what your app will do, and this is your homework, not ours!
