well, this is a very old question and it lacks a lot of information. I got here because I got the same error at runtime trying to compile this legacy sample code from OpenGL Programming Guide (Red Book) samples on my mac.
Doing some search I realised the issue is caused by GLUT_INDEX which has been depreciated a long time ago and it must be avoided. an alternative implementation with GLUT_RGB can be found here.
