I am currently looking for suggestions as to what programming languages and books that are available as an complimentary introduction to programming. Exclude Alice Teaches Programming.

Here is the following I have at the moment:

Sam Teaches C Programming

Lua Scripting

Ruby On Rails

Please note, Ubuntu is not a programming language (and as far as I know 'Ruby on Rails' isn't as well).

There is a big difference between C and Lua (or Ruby): the former needs compilation and produces native executables, while the latter is interpreted (scripting language).

I would suggest yout to learn both Lua and C, because they fit very well together (that is Lua would give you high level facilities and C could support it with is low level and performance strenghts).

The best book I know about Lua is Programming in Lua/[^].

About C there are many many books and tutorials, I cannot recommend a particular one.
