this line in my code causes this exception

            resultSet = source.=QueryWithResultSet(query);

Please see my comment to the question. Use XML v.1.0. This is the version supported by .NET XML tools, such as generators.
This MSDN page states that .NET (as of v.4.6) supports XML v.1.0:
