Is there an alternative option than to ping or connect to a database to retrieve records/files? To ping the database too often can cause the system to crash, so was wondering if there was an alternative to using the ping method. Thanks!

The question makes no sense at all.

You never ping to retrieve anything. Actually, you don't really ping a database; essentially you ping a host, even if you mean some Oracle utility or anything like that. Ping just checks up a connection. And I never heard that it causes any crash (anyone aware of such crash can correct me if I'm wrong :-)).

And, finally, the use of databases are not done via retrieving of database files, unless this is one of those file-based database tools not using even any client-server technology.
