Here is my opinion: I seriously think only fundamental education needs taking courses, but that would not be "course" but would take university, college. If you don't have it, getting it by yourself would be problematic, but not at all impossible. If you have it, learning some particular platform, API would be much more efficient without taking any courses.

It's not just totally subjective opinion: I knew many good, even brilliant engineers who had really good fundamental education and then learned Windows programming completely from scratch, totally on their own, even before Internet documentation became accessible. I know much less very good engineers who did the same without any serious formal fundamental education; but I cannot say they did not have fundamental education at all, rather, they self-educated, to some level.

And finally, I never knew a single one who get to any serious, or at least marginally useful level, at any courses, on-line or not. Not a single one. Never in my life. I don't say that course are always useless, I just never met a person who learned engineering using courses. And I communicated with very many people…
