For security reasons Javascript can't access the machine, or various malicious sites would be running EXE files on your computer whenever they felt like it. If you could do it, so could they.

And the ActiveX solution will only work on IE and only when ActiveX controls are enabled - which they aren't by default to prevent such security breaches.
