And this should be the case for all good websites.

Only idiots and beginners store passwords in clear text: anyone who knows what they are doing stores a hashed value (using a one-way hash which used to be MD5 but is not normally SHA) to prevent passwords being stolen. You hash the password the user entered, compare than against the stored hash and if they match, you let him in. That way, even if your DB is compromised the passwords are useless because nobody - including the website owner - can "undo" the hashing to reveal the original input.

If you have forgotten what is was, your only option is to ask for it to be reset to a random value.
