Is the only way to map external SFTP feeds (flat files) to a Blob is to use URI?

There are other ways on getting around using URI; Some solutions are strictly third party solution such as here and here . however, you should consider checking out AZcopy which allows you to upload files directly to Azure Blob Storage, I'm not sure if it would fit within the requirements you have or not.
