We are running SharePoint 2013 on premise and are trying to render .xls Excel files in the browser via Excel Services.  The default action we are seeing is that when a .xls file is opened from SharePoint, an "Open Document" pop up window asks how we want to open the file: Edit or Read Only.  After selecting either Edit or Read Only, the .xls file opens in the client Excel version, even though we have the Library set up to open in the browser.  The open in the browser functionality works as expected with .xlsx files.

This occurs with a simple excel file (.xls) without any macros or other additional Excel features. We have also tried to forward .xls files to the ExcelViewer.aspx url, but receive an error that the file "is possibly corrupt or using a file format that’s not supported".

I have seen a lot of posts relating to older versions of SharePoint not supporting the .xls format, but this article (https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Differences-between-using-a-workbook-in-the-browser-and-in-Excel-f0dc28ed-b85d-4e1d-be6d-5878005db3b6) which lists SharePoint 2013 specifically looks like it states support of .xls files. If they are in fact supported, what are there additional steps to set up to allow for .xls files in the browser?

XLS is supported with Excel Calculation Services (the Service Application) in place. This requires an Enterprise license.
