Hello Experts,

We are trying to take an architectural decision to choose between Azure Analysis Services (Direct Query) or Power BI datasets to build our semantic layer. Our underlying data volume is huge (20-30 TB) and we would like to enable aggregated as well as detailed reporting on a combination of Azure Data base and external tables on Azure Data warehouse. Hence, we are going with Direct Query for building our semantic models. While from the features/functionalities point of view, I believe both have similar capabilities, I would like to know your opinion on any key advantages/disadvantages that you foresee.

Could you also provide your thoughts on how they compare with respect to:

a) Cost

b) Concurrency

According to your description, what did you mean of  "Powerbi dataset"? Did you want to know import and Direct Query's difference?

If so, for Direct Query, its advantages:

1. Data is changing frequently, and near ‘real-time’ reporting is needed
2. Handling very large data, without the need to pre-aggregate
3. Data sovereignty restrictions apply
4. The source is a multidimensional source containing measures (such as SAP BW)

For Import, Import takes advantage of the high-performance query engine of Power BI, but it will store in memory which might be not friendly for a large amount of data.
