this is my first day learning how to setup a vm using ubuntu (or any other vm, for that matter). so i expect the answer to why i time out below is pilot error.

click on the networking under settings in the virtual machines overview page.

检查您是否允许虚拟机的端口22。

Check if you have allowed port 22 for your virtual machine.
