Does anyone have any knowledge on how to get this to work? Having exchange as a requirement is just like M$ - but without conversation histories - the company wont even bite off on Lync - will have to use something like jitsi.

You could develop something client side with the Lync SDK to track all conversations and messages and save them in any format you wish.
