It depends on if you're using Windows Server containers or Hyper-V containers.

Summary for Server containers:

There are four numbers in every OS version.  Differences in the 4th number (the revision number) are supported.  Differences in the 3rd number (the build number) are not.

Generally we strongly recommend regular updates to both host and containers.  You'll get newer, better, safer software.  The more often you update the smaller and easier the updates will be.

Summary for Hyper-V containers:

Hyper-V containers don't share the kernel with the host, so you can do whatever you want.  They are bigger than Server containers because they have their own copy of the kernel.
