Not sure if this is the right category for my question. but this is the closest I can find.

I have an old MS Access (.MDB) database. One of the table contains about 220 fields. All I want to do is to change one field's format from "Standard" to "Percent". But it complains "Property value is too large" and does not let me save the change.

Some details:

#1. I delete all the data in the table in question and all other tables. Done Compact/Repair many times.

#2. While it is .MDB format, I am using MS Access 2013.

#3. I tried open the DB exclusively. Did not work.

#4. I also doubled MaxLocksPerFile value in the registry (from 9500 to 19500). Did not work.

I don't know what else that I can try.

Updates:

a. I upgrade the (.mdb) to (.accdb).
b. I removed about 20 fields and then change to format of the one field from Standard to Percent. IT WORKED.
c. I then adding the removed fields one by one. It FAILED on the third one with the same "Property to large" message.

I wonder if some other spec limit is being hit - like total number of objects. The only specification size reference I found (on a quick search) was for Access 2010, and some links mention that not much has changed.

Other than that, you might be able to work around the limits by moving some tables into a new Access Db and then linking to those tables. ...The classic Front-End / Back-end technique that allows you to separate your data from an application.
