I feel that a good architect doesn't just know design patterns.  They should have been involved with failed projects just as much as they should have been involved with successful projects.  While I don't think that a good architect should know all the details of every technology known to man, they should "know of" all of the technologies and what each one addresses.  How else can you build a system using the appropriate technologies?
