I have been reading about Azure Stack and I have some questions. I am not sure how Azure works in MS data centers. Does MS use third party SAN's for storage like Netapp or do they have their own Azure storage as a service which basically does all the SAN type things? Ditto for security and firewalls. Do the centers use,for instance, Cisco firewalls or do they use all Azure code for providing firewall services - so some type of super Proxy Server/Windows Firewall on steroids? The reason I am asking is to understand what I would be getting if I went with Azure Stack as I understand that it's going to be a private on-premises close clone of the public Azure, very similar to the code and features that MS uses to manage it's own data centers. So if were to get it would I need a third-party SAN or third-party firewalls for my on-premises Azure as I do now for my on-premises Windows Server systems? Or would I be able to get Azure to do the heavy lifting?

Azure Stack does not support external third party SANs for storage nor third-party firewalls. Just like Azure, Azure Stack builds both storage and networking using software - we call this software defined storage and software defined networking. Azure runs at global scale, with thousands of servers to create a region. Few customers will run their private cloud at this scale. With Azure Stack we need to shrink Azure down to a size that matches what our customers will likely deploy. So the minimum scale unit for Azure Stack will be 4 servers. This means that the Azure Stack hardware configuration has some differences from Azure.
