A million dollar question. It is not a simple to answer in a post. FAST is very powerful search engine and you should know what you want from it. For example, if you want only search then it is simple but if we would like to FAST to handle attribute based search or facets/category based search or promotion based management then the approach is different. I would recommend to see FAST Impulse (apart from FAST ESP) if you are looking for ecommerce applications.
