Is it possible to side-load metro apps in windows 8 embedded?  I want to be able to deploy a machine image that is basically stripped down running the metro interface with my custom metro apps in the box and ready to run.  I know that in regular windows 8 you must be in a domain.  That doesn't really make sense for a stand-alone embedded device.

Hi Jonathan,

The plans for Direct Deployment (sideloading) support on Embedded have not been finalized. The same goes for the use of Store-certified Metro style apps. We are still investigating what the best way to support deployment of Metro style apps on Embedded is and should be able to release more information in the future, but I do see your point about the applicability of the domain-requirement for Embedded scenarios. For our CTP2 release though, if you want to test running a Metro style app on Embedded, you should be able to use Visual Studio’s support for deploying a Metro style app to a remote machine. This page describes how to do this for Windows 8 Release Preview and also applies to Embedded:
