Hi, I had the same question before, the answer is, there is no built-in support, but you can easily write your own extension.

It ended with creating a custom domain service which accept some exporting parameters, and return the excell 2007 xml data, which is generated by EPPlus, which is a open source excel library hosted in codeplex.

But you just can not open it just as the built-in excel export functionality in browser mode because of the restricted permission. What you can do is open a SaveFile Dialog.
