(Context: We are developing a full-screen, touch-centric, kiosk application, that interfaces with dlls and hardware devices that are not Metro-compatible. We are looking at Win8 embedded for access to the Metro UI, while being able to lock down the kiosk properly.)

Is there any way to get access to Metro-style UI elements while running in Desktop mode in Windows 8?

Alternatively, is there *any* way to link to a dll that uses the full .net library in a Metro app running in embedded? The toolkit didn't appear to include anything to help us out in this area, but I'm new at this.

I cannot think of any way to use Metro style controls/UI from the desktop/Win32 context and I also understand that VS prevents you from creating a reference to a desktop .NET assembly in a Metro style app project. There may be more information on this in the corresponding VS/Metro-style-app-development forums.

Out of curiosity, could you tell me more on why your devices are non-Metro compatible?
