I have an app that needs to send notifications to our users.  We are wondering if Office Communicator is the right tool for this as all of our users have this installed.  The app will run on an application server and probably call a middle-tier to send the message.  The application server and middle-tiers are load balanced so having a special functional account logged in to Office Communicator on the servers is probably not doable - and probably would not be allowed by the infrastructure/server teams anyway.

So our app needs to pass credentials to the API, send the message, and log off.  Or use CWA ajax and pass all the required login information to the service - assuming our Office Communicator  team can be convinced to install CWA Ajax.  Or another solution I was wondering about is can we send email to an address that would show up in a chat window as if the sender of the email had opened a conversation?

Also, does the client have to be installed on a PC that calls the APIs?  I would rather this be completely self-contained within our application and not require separate installation on the server.

You can write a service using the UCMA API that will send alerts to users that are running Communicator.  If you install the UCMA SDK there is a sample that show how to send IMs using UCMA.  If you install the UCMA SDK to the default location, then the sample is here:
