TFS feels a little old school like SourceSafe with the fact that it sets read only bits on files when you get them and wants to inform the server when you've edited a file under source control.

Is there a way to configure TFS so that it behaves like modern (well, not so modern anymore) VCSes like CVS, Subversion & the like?  I don't want read only files upon get, and who freakin' cares if I start modifying stuff in my local workspace?  I may never even check them in.  That's why we have merge features.
