The difference between XPE and WES2009 is not very much. WES2009 = XPE+Service Pack which also means the Microsoft 5-year support promise gets extended. I don't think you can have two separate installation on the same machine. You can upgrade from XPE to 2009.

However WES7 and WES2009 can co-exist on the same machine (say Windows 7). Some people have also tried to install WES7 on WindowsXP and they have reported success with it.
