I have a touch panel pc with built in 2-wire RS485 running windows CE 6 and I have a dell desktop with a usb to RS485 adapter running windows 7.  I can communicate successfully between the windows 7 PC through PuTTY and hyperteminal with my devices on the rs485 network, but I have had no such luck with the panel PC.  Can anyone explain why this might be the case?

Based on my experience I'd check if the BIOS setup for the serial ports is correct. In addition, as you know RS485 is a half duplex bus: it may be the case that the RS485 in the Panel PC does not automatically switch between RX and TX mode and you need to do it 'manually' using the RTS or DTR setting in the serial port MCR register (this should be noted in the panel PC manual)
