I have a servlet written in Java which authenticates the user against the server and then opens/view compressed file in .rar extension. I have specified content type as 'application/x-compressed', IE7 promote the download popup and change the file extension to .zip. I have tried 'application/x-rar-compressed' and IE7 does not recognized it. How can I sepecify the file name, or prevent IE7 change the comrepssed file extension.

Windows doesn't have a rar decompresser by default.  So it assumes that by compress, you mean zipped.  I think you just need to send it as a generic binary file; then IE won't mess with it.
