As you say, you specified an "invalid" Id, and "Id is malformed", along with the associated error code, is what you get when you pass invalid Ids to EWS. The message read "malformed" because EWS Ids are generated according to a specific internal format which your invalid Id does not respect.

If you pass an Id that is not malformed but doesn't repesent an actual item in Exchange, you will receive an error that says "The item could not be found in the store".
