I'm sorry to have to ask what must be a trivial question but have been playing with queries all morning and can't find how to do what I want.

I want to be able to see the total effort applicable to a Feature.

Your goal could not be reached. A query now could only search for two layers work items. You just could see the feature--> Story-->Task in Features Backlog, like this:
