My web site has been in production for a couple of years. I haven't done a great job at deleting images in folders as things have changed. I now have a couple of hundred images spread out over 5-6 folders - some in each folder still being used. I've run the REPORTS for files and see that the LINKS for most images is "0"  ...  but the "0" is also on image files that are in use. So maybe I'm misinterpreting what the "0" means.

What's the best/easiest method to scan & delete images that I'm no longer using? (Once I do that, I'll consolidate and better manage when I add/remove files.)

You are using the Problems > Unlinked Files report, right? A file is considered unlinked when there is no direct or indirect path – built with static HTML links – from the homepage of the website to that file.

This means that image file used only in JavaScript or PHP code are always considered unlinked, although you will not want to delete them. Also make sure that you have defined a homepage, typically named index.html or Default.aspx. The homepage is distinguished from other pages by a house symbol in Folder List und Site View.
