I am developping a program with VS2008. Now, I want to start a Help system for my users. I have downloaded HTML Workshop from Microsoft. Having made (small) Help projects in the past, I am not entirely new to HTML Workshop. When I look at Help/Version... in HTML Workshop, I get Version number 4.74.8702.0 and, what bothers me, Copyright (c) 1996-1999. Is this the latest version of HTML Workshop???
Also, when I install HTML Workshop from the download, I get a message (warning) that there is a newer version of Help Workshop on my computer. I wouldn´t now where that version could reside. Beside VS2008, I have also VS2005 installed.

The version of HTML Help Workshop that you downloaded from the Microsoft HTML Help Downloads page is the latest one, even if it dates back to the last century! A patch is available from Microsoft Product Support with which you can fix a small bug in HTML Help Workshop — see Knowledge Base article 294990 — but that is the extent to which you can upgrade the application.
The warning message that you saw at the end of the setup process is misleading, and you can safely ignore it. The installer has tried to upgrade the HTML Help viewer components on your machine, but that's not possible because: a) you already have much more recent versions of these components, and b) in all modern versions of Windows, these components are protected system components that can only be upgraded through Windows service packs and security updates.
In short, you should now have everything you need to start building HTML Help files. I'd recommend that you take a look at the following tutorial for guidelines on how to use HTML Help Workshop:

You may also want to try the shareware tool FAR, created by Microsoft Help MVP Rob Chandler. This goes a long way to overcome some of the deficiencies in HTML Help Workshop.
