You should be able to automate your scenario (mentioned above) in CodedUI Test. The controls I believe have good enough accessiblity (MSAA) support. The items on left pane would be tree items and the right pane will be a list box where you can record selection.

I did not get what you meant my "one universal function". You can record your scenario in one test method, if this is what you want.
