Ah, I expect that you'll spend more money trying to reinvent the wheel by trying to build an appliction that generates reports from forms than the upgrade price for VS. However, there are free alternatives: 

*  Check out Report Builder 2.0--it's a free download from Microsoft that does NOT require SQL Server Reporting Services (which is free, incidentally) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9f783224-9871-4eea-b1d5-f3140a253db6&displaylang=en

*  Check out SQL Server Express Advanced Services Edition. It includes SQL Server Reporting services that can be used to create reports against any data source. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=b5d1b8c3-fda5-4508-b0d0-1311d670e336. Once a report is built, it can be launched from an application using a browser control that points to the report server URL.
