According to Microsoft's promotional materials, the only difference between Search Server 2008 and Search Server 2008 Express is that Express does not support high availability and load balancing.

In the documentation, however, at the top of the page that describes authentication and security trimming, it says "The information in this section does not apply to Microsoft Search Server 2008 Express.  It applies to the full version of MIcrosoft Search Server 2008 only."
