Teresa

Teresa,

Hi everyone.

I'm having a problem I can't seem to figure out.  I have WinXP Pro Service Pack 2.  I've installed most of the updates from SP3 but didn't want all of them so I made them custom updates.
I can go online and surf all I want but as soon as I log into a secure website such as Yahoo! Mail, or an online bank account, or anywhere that requires a username and password, my cpu spikes up to 100%.  I enter my username and password and then it spikes.  It will stay there for about 4-5 minutes and then it will settle down and log me into the secure website.
I have downloaded process explorer but I couldn't really figure it out.  I'm not sure how to read the threads or know if that is even what I need to look at.  I have looked at Sysinternals Process Utilities to see if there was something that could help me but I'm not sure which one would be best if any.  What I really need is something that will list each running service, dll, and anything else that can help me find out what is running when I try to log on.  I have tried to stop all services that weren't necessary to run windows and internet but still can't find the problem.  The problem is in the services.  I have uninstalled any virus protection program that I can find on my system, old and new, but still didn't fix the problem.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Teresa

Hi Teresa,

It's strange that Process Explorer didn't show you where your CPU cycles are being spent. You can try using a more powerful tool, called xperf, that comes as part of the WPT Kit available for download on this site. You'll need to capture an ETL trace and then open it in xperf to see how your CPU is being used.

To get started please follow the Getting Started section on the Windows Performance Analysis DevCenter (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/performance).

Hope this helps,
Michael
