If you installed Business Intellingence Development Studio (BIDS) from a SQL Server 2008 install then it will only support creation of 2008 RDL reports and depoloyment to SQL RS 2008. If you want to create report server projects that will deploy to a SQL RS 2005 Server then you'll have to install BIDS from a SQL Server 2005 install.  Visual Studio 2008 supports creation of 2005 RDLCs but these are meant to be used with the ReportViewer control; however the schema is the same but the report designer does not support all of the features that are installed with BIDS.
