I would like to be able to detect which version of the ReportViewer control a client has installed. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do this or where to start. I can't even figure out how the ReportViewer gets installed, or where it gets installed to.

The ReportViewer Control is installed into the GAC.  You can find out what version it is if you go to %Windows%/assembly and then find the entry for Microsoft.ReportViewer.Common, WinForms or WebForms.  Right click to bring up the properties for the entry and click on the version tab.
