 I have a robotic arm that places plates on a shelf, I want to be able to use a camera to see which shelves are empty and if there is something in the gripper when something goes wrong.

Would the kinect be a suitable camera for this project? I know there are a lot of examples for using the kinect to detect human anatomy, and I have heard about the blob detection for the kinect but will it help for detecting if there is an object on a specific shelf. Are there any other cameras or programs you can recommend.

The camera or the Kinect for Windows SDK does not do object detection directly, but the data you get from the camera can be used for that task. There are third party libraries that can do this. The only one I am heard of is OpenCV, but it is based on color. The Point Cloud Library also does this, but there is a bit more work to get it working.
