In Microsoft Project, a Late Task is any task whose timephased % Complete does not go to the Current Date line or the Status Date line.  For example, suppose you have a task with a Duration of 10 days.  The task is supposed to start on a Monday and finish on a Friday in the second week of the task.  On Friday at the end of the first week, this 10-day task should have a % Complete value of 50%.  But if the task has a % Complete value less than 50%, this means the task is a Late Task.
