Are you referencing Kinect SDK 1.7, there is no 7.1? There are no functional differences with the core of Kinect 1.7 and 1.8. It is the same runtime api's, not changes were made to functionality. Most changes came with the Toolkit features.

As for your issues, the image did not come through. If you have uninstalled the SDK, you have to ensure you removed all previous parts of the install(drivers, runtime, speech, sdk, toolkit) that were install before installing the previous. You can updated the global system environment variables(KINECTSDK10_DIR / KINECT_TOOLKIT_DIR) to the correct path. You will have to reboot the system once you do this. You can also just update your Visual Studio project build directories to the explicit path to the folder.
