I am trying to record short (<.25sec) samples from the sound set to the speakers on my computer running 32bit Windows 7 in VB Express 2008.

I have tried mci and that can only record from the devices identified as recordable which the output to speakers is not :-(

Of course you can record only from recording devices, not from playback devices.
But there is a trick: some soundcards offer a "loop back device", i.e. everything they play they send also into a recording device. Either the sound card of your computer can do so, or you have to purchase such one.

"loop back" or "record what you hear" is what I''m looking for - however Microsoft have removed it from Windows 7 - hence my problem. As an experiment I have just installed a second Hard Drive in the machine and installed windows XP on it and, lo and behold, I get the option to record the Stereo Mix (ie what is being sent to the speakers).

So now I know it was possible on my hardware why the H*** isn''t it supported in Windows 7?


Since this option disappears in Windows 7 I assume that the Stereo Mix is either part of the driver or (more likely) part of the mixer software. Either way Microsoft have once again removed a very useful function for no apparent reason.

According to this article [^] I''m stuffed as far as using just windows 7 is concerned. It would appear that we have another example of Microsoft adding useless stuff to their OS and removing useful stuff.

I suppose it all adds to the rich tapestry of life :-(
