I think this is simple but can't figure it out...

Picture a layer (1) that I have drawn a larger shape. Inside the larger shape, I have drawn "closed shapes" that I want to be transparent so the image on the layer (2) below can be seen through the closed shapes on layer 1.   I drew the shapes with b-spline because they are not all straight lines. I am curious how to do this so I could make changes to layer 2 under layer 1 and have the changes show through my openings in layer 1.....

Clear  as mud???  Sorry if it is a simple question. I am playing with a logo and I am "learning as I go". I have version 4 of Web, Design.  This is in Design. Once done, I want to be able to save so I can put on website, stationary, etc. (and adjust sizes and backgrounds later)....

Hmmm....another newbie who probably didn't read the Help files. 

确定...将较小的封闭形状放在较大的形状上并全部选中，然后使用对象>路径操作>返回减去前面

对象>复合对象>发布，任何一种都可以工作并且可以撤消。

OK...Position the smaller closed shapes on the larger shape and select them all, then use Object>Path Operations>Back Minus Front  or  Object>Compound Object>Make.  Either will work and can be undone by using Object>Compound Object>Release.
