My query excludes Tasks and Bugs, yet when I get work items using that query, Project pulls in Tasks and Bugs as well. How can I exclude these 2 work item types from being retrieved?

When you run the query in the web access, did you get Tasks and Bugs in the query result? And when you click the "find" in the following picture, which work items did you get?

In the result list, you could select the work items you want to show in the MS project. And  I suggest that you could:
