Hi,

I am switching and learning to upgrade myself to .net Core development using VS2017.  Then I come across this thing called VS Code, which is free and cross platform dev tool.  We bought a enterprise version of VS license of 5 seats and that .net Core supposed to allow cross platform development but if there is free VS Code then why do we need to purchase the VS2017 Enterprise version?  What's the difference?

We are looking to develop some mobile app, asp.net Core web applications, python application...

Welcome to the MSDN forum.

Visual Studio Enterprise 2017 is a "full-featured" and "convenient" development environment.

Visual Studio Code is a cross-platform (Linux, Mac OS, Windows) editor that can be extended with plugins to your needs.

For example, if you want to use VS Code with ASP.NET:

• You need to install a special "extension" called ASP.NET 5/DNX. Installation is different depending the OS you are using.
• To get project scaffolding you need to run a command-line script on your own.
• Debugging ASP.NET isn't currently supported.

But when you use Visual Studio Enterprise 2017, you could debug and run directly through the VS ID.
