Do this: Select the objects you want to export, or just choose Export if you're exporting the entire artboard (canvas). Choose a file format; PNG is the default. If you choose PNG, change the color mode to Indexed color to activate the Matte color option. The Matte color option is where you set the color you want to be transparent. You can choose a color using the color picker or you can choose the Eye Dropper tool and click on the color you want to be transparent.
